Benny Dayal's first big break came from A. R. Rahman in the form of Maduraikku Pogathadee way back in 2007, and since then he has sung for a variety of composers across India. With one notable exception, that is. And that void gets filled with 60 Vayadu Maaniram, where he sings not one, not two, but three of the four songs composed by Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja. His rendition of Thedi Thedi alongside Vibhavari Apte Joshi is top-notch, and Ilaiyaraaja, for his part, crafts an exquisite tune that almost sounds like a spiritual follow-up to Saayndhu Saayndhu. It's not just Dayal though, for Monali Thakur also makes her Tamil singing debut with Naalum Naalum (which appears in two versions, sung by the two singers), a true-blue Raja melody that can be spotted from a mile away. The guitar-led piece, replete with the composer's signature synth swirls, is beyond captivating, with the background humming adding a lovely touch that borders on bliss. Ilaiyaraaja himself goes behind the mic for Iraivanai Thedi, its violin-laden melancholic soundbed beautifully underpinning the quest for meaning in life. For Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu's Tamil adaptation, Ilaiyaraaja gives a radical reinterpretation that's diametrically different from Charan Raj's, while making it all sound very pleasant and utterly delightful.
