Music Review: Genius (Hindi)

The best decision Himesh Reshammiya may have taken with Genius was to not take over the singing reins in every song, and the result shows. Sure, the tunes don't break any new ground, but what a difference great choice of singers makes! Dil Meri Na Sune is laid over a lilting soundscape and to top it all, Atif Aslam (he is on a roll, isn't he?) lends it right amount of emotional heft with his earnest rendition. For the pleasant qawwali-like Tera Fitoor, he relies on Arijit Singh, and the man, as usual, doesn't disappoint. Likewise for Holi Biraj Ma, he ropes in an excellent Jubin Nautiyal to do the singing honours of the spirited Holi-themed dance number, even as Pyar De Pyar Le, dated by Himesh standards, gets a new lease of life in Dev Negi, Ikka Singh and Lulia Vantur's (auto-tune or otherwise!) singing. Tujhse Kahan Juda Hoon Main is your usual 90's styled melancholic fix, with Himesh relegating himself to let Neeti Mohan do all the vocal heavylifting. Genius may be lacking big time in the genius department, but Himesh Reshammiya makes his strongest comeback in years since Radio.
