Music Review: Shakuntala Devi (Hindi)

Pass Nahi Toh Fail Nahi is an anthemic ode to arithmetic, the song's rock-driven hook and Sunidhi Chauhan's effervescent rendition taking it in unexpected directions. Shakuntala Devi's math skills made her world famous in the 1950's, which is what Rani Hindustani is all about (interestingly, it's arranged by Mikey McCleary), and Sunidhi croons this retro-leaning piece exceptionally well, bringing an effortless flamboyance and mischief to the proceedings. The mantle then passes on to Shreya Ghoshal, who harmonises throughout the poignant, lullaby-like acoustic melody Paheli, even as Benny Dayal and Monali Thakur make for an interesting vocal combination in the flamenco-inflected dance piece Jhilmil Piya. Spanning less than 12 minutes, there's nothing annoying (read: remix) on Shakuntala Devi. There are no skips. It's a short and an overwhelmingly pleasant piece of work that hits the sweet spot between familiar and something new.
