Book Review: The Shadow Friend

A gruesome ritualistic death that transpired twenty-five years ago becomes fodder for a copycat killer as body count rises and suspects pile up, leading detective Amanda Beck to put together the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle of what exactly happened all that years ago. The atmospheric whodunit, as complex as it sounds, juggles multiple plot lines with ease, smoothly transitioning between past and present, with Alex North toying with the supernatural to elicit a sense of creepy, spine-tingling excitement. The Shadow Friend (aka The Shadows), aside from resorting to clever misdirection to produce genuine moments of surprise, deftly employs horror tropes to pull the rug out from under the reader with a final twist that blurs the optics completely. An absorbing, if unevenly paced, thriller that begs to be read in one sitting.
