Book Review: The Girl from Widow Hills

When sleepwalking six-year-old Arden Maynor was rescued three days after she was swept away in a flash flood and found trapped in Kentucky's underground drainage pipes, the traumatic incident and the ensuing media circus upended her life forever to the point that she changed her identity and moved to North Carolina, putting the ordeal behind her and starting over afresh. Working as a hospital administrator, Olivia, as she now goes by, truly feels her past is a closed chapter, but it doesn't take far too long for this idyll to take a darker turn after a man turns up dead on her property just weeks ahead of the twentieth anniversary of her rescue. To make matters worse, Olivia is crippled with self-doubt and her inability to recollect what exactly happened during those three days makes her suspect herself. What follows is a taut thriller with an intriguing beginning, a fast-paced middle, and a deeply disturbing climax. Author Megan Miranda delivers an exciting variation of familiar elements (unreliable narrator says hello!), and turns it on its head with a psychological twist that makes the exploration worthwhile.
