2018 in Music: Top 40 Songs in Tamil

An year filled with great music from A. R. Rahman, M. Ghibran, Santhosh Narayanan, Govind Vasantha and of course Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Madura Marikozhundhae, Sevandhu Pochu Nenju, Kalla Kalavaani, Bhoomi Bhoomi, Simtaangaran, OMG Ponnu, Raajali, Pullinangal - A. R. Rahman throws convention out of the window with an experimental blend of industrial pop, rap and haunting melodies for Mani Ratnam's violent tale of a family blood feud over a multinational criminal empire. The haunting choral chanting of Madura Marikozhundhae, with its understated tapestry of whirring looped voices and droning tambura, is easily of the composer's most uniquely original works.

Saukaaram Pottu - A lilting folk number from Ved Shanker Sugavanam, beautifully complemented by Vijay Prakash.

The Karma Theme, Orey Oru - Anirudh Ravichander embraces a Skrillex-like aesthetic for the inspirational EDM track and addictive doesn't begin to explain it. Orey Oru's gentle acoustic melody, on the other hand, finds its perfect match in Jonita Gandhi and Keba Jeremiah's guitars.

Ada Ada - A delectable melody from Jakes Bejoy, and Madhu Balakrishnan needs to be heard more often!

Vaanam Thoorammalae - S. Thaman crafts a melodious fusion of pop layered with Indian classical bits.

Kanna Enthen Thaye - A gentle, sweet-sounding melody from Arun Gopan, topped by K. S. Chithra's phenomenal singing.

Thedi Thedi - A trademark Ilaiyaraaja composition, and, needless to say, very mellifluous.

Saattaiyin Munaiyil, Vaanthooral, Setthu Pocchu Manasu, Dhooramaai, Never Let Me Go - The year when Yuvan Shankar Raja bounced back to terrific form.

Uruvaan Churukku, Pondattee - Where Achu Rajamani leaves his unique stamp all over the folky tunes.

Kaathalae Kaathalae, The Life of Ram, Enn Uyire, Alathi Anbai - Govind Vasantha makes as astounding debut in Tamil not with one but two terrific soundtracks.

Hey Piriyame Piriyame, Pesugindren Pesugindren, Gnyabagam Varugiradha - Gorgeously layered melodies from M. Ghibran.

Yaaradi Neril Thondrum - An entirely strings-laden melody from G. V. Prakash, sung flawlessly by Sathyaprakash.

Kaarkuzhal Kadavaiye, Pottakaatil Poovasam, Vaa Rayil Vida Polaama, Urimayai Meetpom, Oru Mara Nizhalil - Santhosh Narayanan's brand of sound meets soul and the results are as fantastic as ever.

Aariyane - Shweta Mohan rules this semi-classical fusion from Balamurali Balu.

Vilagaadhe Enadhuyirae - Undeniably pretty, in typical Joshua Sridhar style, with solid vocals from Haricharan Seshadri.

Yean Penne Neeyum - Another Haricharan melody, and a frenetic blend of guitar, mandolin, sitar and violin, this time from Sam C. S.

Yaenadi, Geedhaara Kiliye - Darbuka Siva and his winsome melodies, with Haricharan and Sathyaprakash for vocal company.
