Tanishk Bagchi has by now totally mastered the technique of recreating old Bollywood hits, a trend he helped kick-off big time with last year's Hamma Hamma (he went on to remix Tamma Tamma and he already has Chamma Chamma lined up for 2019), and he continues to run riot with the foot-tapping but forgettable Aankh Marey, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Tere Bin (aptly sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan) that works well within its melodic confines. His original tunes, in comparison, meander about without registering much of an impression, as is Lijo George-Dj Chetas' Mera Wala Dance. Perhaps in a not so subtle nod to its Telugu roots (Simmba is the remake of 2015 film Temper, a problematic entertainer that embodies a brand of toxic masculinity to champion the cause of women safety), popular Tollywood composer S. Thaman also joins the mix for a theme song, and that's all there is to it. Banal and run-of-the-mill, Simmba exemplifies everything that's wrong with Bollywood music today.
