Heavy Rotation: Abhimann Roy, S. D. Arvinda, Vasuki Vaibhav & More

A quick take on some of the Kannada releases from the last couple of months...

Kanneeraa (Kavacha) - Kavacha, a Kannada remake of the Malayalam film Oppam, reuses most of 4Musics' tunes from the original, and the result is as unimpressive as the latter, with the exception of Arjun Janya's heartfelt Kanneeraa.

Yaaro Yaaro, Brotheru Brotheru (Orange) - Thaman, in his Kannada re-entry after two years, resorts to stereotypically auto-tune heavy compositions in Orange, but it is a befuddling mystery how he consistently manages to transform them into earworms.

Premadoorina, Sundara Adachane (Chanaksha) - Anuradha Bhat and Sruthy Sasidharan confidently lead the ear-pleasing tunes from Abhimann Roy.

What A Tragedy, Namo Venkatesha (Mataash) - Utterly wacky listens from S. D. Arvinda, who also happens to be the film's director.

Ee Saniha, Thalupisadhe Ulidhiruva (Anukta) - Where composer Vasuki Vaibhav, Ashwin Sharma and Palak Muchhal enthral in Nobin Paul's lilting semi-classical melodies Ee Saniha and Thalupisadhe Ulidhiruva.

Nee Nanna Bhagavathgeethe (Bhairava Geetha) - Ravi Shankar ropes in Vijay Yesudas and Chinmayi for what's an arresting classical-folk fusion.

Arere Avala Naguva, He Sharade, Karavali Song, Shabda Madi Daari Keli (Bur Burr), Tooruttu, Aleyo Alege (Patho Song) (Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu, Koduge: Ramanna Rai) - Vaibhav's third outing after the excellent Rama Rama Re (who can forget the mellifluous Namma Kaayo Devane?) and Churikatte (which features the splendorous Samaya Nodade) is a veritable potpourri of traditional and contemporary sounds, consistently engaging and topped by excellent singing from the man himself. Dadda Song, in particular, reminds one of Santhosh Narayanan's Kannamma, in a good way that is. Safe to say, Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale... is easily one of the best soundtracks to come out this year.
