Music Review: Thorati (Tamil)
Composer(s): Ved Shanker Sugavanam

Ved Shanker's Azhagu Kutti Chellam was a dazzling effort, but since then, barring the odd China, he has had quite a few dormant years on the album front. But the student of A. R. Rahman's KM Music Conservatory has finally returned, armed with a set of traditional folk tunes (the lilting melodies Yelle Yelle, Saukaaram Pottu and Usura Urukki are the easy highlights), deftly balancing experimentation and soul, and expertly backed by Kalyani Nair and Vijay Prakash on the vocals. The arrangements too are simple yet breathtaking, incorporating an enticing blend of flute, ghatam and gentle strings, at the same time complementing the tunes so beautifully. Thorati is a welcome mix of rustic charmers, and Ved Shanker should be around more often!
