Music Review: Kedarnath (Hindi)
Composer(s): Amit Trivedi

After blockbuster turns in Andhadhun and Manmarziyaan, Amit Trivedi is back with Kedarnath, a romantic saga that beyond offering a little peek into his creative genius is riddled with cookie-cutter tunes that fails to engage after a couple of listens. Which is quite surprising, because this is also the third collaboration between director Abhishek Kapoor and Trivedi after Kai Po Che! and Fitoor. Namo Namo, while a perfectly serviceable theme to establish the film's backdrop, comes across as all too familiar, and Sweetheart too latches on to the Trivedi brand of Punjabi folky melody that recalls his work from Ghanchakkar and Queen. Thankfully the standouts more than make up for the slump. Arijit Singh and Nikhita Gandhi (almost resembling Jasleen Kaur's voice) sung Qaafirana is intoxicating, beautifully capturing the essence of falling in love, even as Jaan 'Nisaar, which appears in two versions sung by Arijit and Asees Kaur, rides on a lovely acoustic soundbed (courtesy Sanjoy Das and Meghdeep Bose) that's both serene and comforting. Kedarnath is not quite the musical salvation that one might expect, but the brand that's Amit Trivedi comes through intact.
