Listen: Anna Meredith's "Eighth Grade" (OST)
Experimental composer Anna Meredith has a new album Anno coming out next month in collaboration with Scottish Ensemble, but earlier this year it became known that she is also scoring for Eighth Grade, a Bo Burnham directed coming-of-age film about a thirteen-year-old girl who makes her way through the last week of middle school while experiencing the ups and downs of a suburban social-media-saturated adolescence. Now that the movie is playing in select markets after its acclaimed Sundance debut, the accompanying soundtrack has arrived too. In addition to featuring Meredith's breakout hit Nautilus and Honeyed Words, both of which were the standouts of her 2016 first album Varmints, the gently pulsating electronic soundscape lends it an irresistible charm, at the same time beautifully capturing the anxiety, chaos and excitement when you are young.
