Music Review: Saamy Square (Tamil)

Composer(s): Devi Sri Prasad

For a commercial vehicle like Saamy Square, Devi Sri Prasad concocts a four-quadrant soundtrack that sounds exactly like what you would expect, featuring a stereotypical mishmash of folk numbers, mass songs, emotional tracks and romantic melodies that fail to bring anything new to the table. Take for example, Pudhu Metro Rail, it's catchy as the clap but perhaps the only surprising thing about the song is that it exists. It's exactly the kind of number DSP has been putting out for what seems like forever, so much so much it's ennui-inducing. For what it's worth, Adhiroobaney stands out, the lively tune bedecked by an engaging orchestral interlude and M. M. Manasi's effective rendition. Karthik too does well in Amma Amma, lending the tune a touch of soulful pathos. In his comeback to Tamil after Puli, DSP plays safe once again, this time with less than satisfactory results.
