Kaatrin Mozhi marks the debut of A. H. Kaashif as a composer, but he already has a few singles with Javed Ali and Vishal Dadlani to his credit. Plus he is also A. R. Rahman's nephew and is part of Qutub-E-Kripa ensemble, the alumni group from Rahman's music school KM Music Conservatory who have been in charge of the background score for many of his films of late. So it's easy to see why the production value is top-notch. Opener Dirty Pondatti (Ban Ja Rani) is breezy in Benny Dayal and Swagatha S. Krishnan's vocals, and Sid Sriram brings his unique brand of soul to Po Urave (Rafu?). Kelambitta (Farrata) and Rekkai Thulirtha (Manva Likes To Fly) are pleasant too, but not all that engaging, and that's why I keep returning to the album's stupendous opening run. When it's firing on all cylinders. Kaatrin Mozhi is no match for Tumhari Sulu's ebullience, but A. H. Kaashif makes a promising debut.
