Listen: Beach House's "Alien" (Updated)
Very few bands can get away with making the same stuff over and over again, but Beach House, the otherworldly kaleidoscopic music purveyors, have emerged as that rare breed who can sound exactly the same from album to album and yet subtly tweak them to interesting results. Listening to their songs isn't just an exercise in lysergia, but also one that's so affecting and immersive, it defies explanation. So what could be better than new music from the Baltimore-based alt-rock duo, right? For merely a couple of months after Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally released one of the best albums this year, they are back with an unreleased B-side called Alien (currently sold as part of their European tour) that's so dreamy shoegaze, it fits right in with 7 and makes me wonder why is it even an outtake in the first place.
Update: The song has been taken down for obvious copyright reasons but you can listen to it at about 6:34 PDT mark by heading to KEXP > Archive > October 15 > The Morning Show (John Richards). And here's their Facebook post from last month where they joke about "how could we not release a 7" with this album...":
