Listen: Tame Impala's "On Track" / "One More Hour" / "Breathe Deeper"

The sonic evolution of Kevin Parker is here for all to see. The Currents have been shifting for a while... after all. Gone are the soundscapes that propel the listener into a mind-swirling, nearly psychedelic journey, the obtuse nods to lysergic hypnosis that consistently float above pop's sonic slipstream, and in its place is something poppier, but woozy all the same — like as if swapping one brand of technicolour haze for another. It's an acid trip of a different kind. The Slow Rush shifts and strays from Tame Impala's signature warbly tones for a more linear effort that's packed with disco-leaning, electro-funk rhythms bolstered by buzzing sci-fi synths, pattering congas and throbbing bass. What was once convention breaching and experimental now slides into an ocean of snappy handclaps and kinetic pulsing grooves. It glows and glimmers, aided by Parker's reverb-laden falsetto. Listened in its entirety, The Slow Rush is exactly what it is — an upbeat sugary rush that's fuzzy and retro-futuristic, but also one that evokes a sweet nostalgic mood in ways that feels radio-friendly and summer-ready.
