Govind Vasantha, for 96's Telugu remake Jaanu, brings a mix of old and new when the safest option would have been to simply retain the same tunes from the original. The good thing about Vasantha's music, then, is that even when the music swells, it never gets intrusive. Oohale, the Kaathalae Kaathalae equivalent, is stringy goodness sung to perfection by Chinmayi, who brings her A-game to Komma Veedi (Iravingu Theevai), an intoxicating melody that drawls wonderfully, with a lovely veena-soaked interlude. Anantham retains the soul of Anthaathi, its brooding electronic soundscape aptly complemented by Chinmayi and the composer himself. The remaining four songs, completely new, bloom with acoustic (Pranam, Naa Kale Kalai, Inthena) and folk (Life of Ram) flourishes, even as Vasantha's dexterity in the arrangements comes to the fore. Despite the obvious comparisons, Jaanu manages to be soul-stirring and unique on its own.
