Music Review: Oh My Kadavule (Tamil)

Composer(s): Leon James

Leon James' latest effort ticks off the requisite boxes for a breezy album, in his trademark style. But it's not without its lows. The music, skewing largely towards the pop-rock side of the spectrum, goes up and down, see-sawing between the unimpressive (Friendship Anthem) and the catchy, with Kadhaippoma emerging the soundtrack's highpoint. The charming acoustic melody has Sid Sriram's vocals for company — need I say more? — while the grungy flavour of Kadhal Kozhappudhey rides on guitarist Sanjeev Thomas' effortless rendition. Haiyo Haiyo, in its original version, disappoints, but the remix gets a Skrillex-like snazzy EDM makeover that's just as insidiously addictive and propelled along by a profusion of dubstep-leaning sounds, flute loops and ghatam. Leon James dependably continues to belt out slickly produced music with Oh My Kadavule.

  1. I'm interested to see your thoughts on the soundtrack of Love Aaj Kal (2020) by Pritam. I thought that was another fantastic effort from him among his collaborations with director Imtiaz Ali.

    1. I am listening to it 😊. The review should be out in a day or two. But I agree, it’s another great effort from Pritam.

Too bad, the music is attached to terrible movies — Jab Harry Met Sejal, Jagga Jasoos, Kalank, and now, Love Aaj Kal.
