Listen: Cindy Lee's "Lucifer Stand" / "Just For Loving You I Pay the Price" / "Heavy Metal"
Until now, I knew nothing about Cindy Lee or who's behind it. But after having listened to What's Tonight to Eternity (which released over the weekend), all I know is this album is unlike any other I have come across recently. Straddling avant-garde sensibilities with aplomb, this diverse, genre-less sonic exercise from ex-Women lead singer Patrick Flegel (fellow band mates Matthew Flegel and Michael Wallace would go on to form Preoccupations) is chaotic and unsettling all at once, one that staunchly refuses to get boxed in, blending elements of retro-pop with a tinge of brooding synths and noisy indie-rock. The terrain of skewed pop mechanics needs a little getting used to, but a haunting, surreal exploration it undoubtedly is.
