Heavy Rotation: Vidyasagar (Part VI)
I guess, at this point, it's amply clear: I can't simply enough of Vidyasagar and his stunning melodies! Explore more of his music here, here, here, here and here...
Vennilaa (Ponniyin Selvan) - Harish Raghavendra is relatively a rare presence in Vidyasagar's discography (although it was the composer who introduced him in films with Vaa Sagi Vaa Sagi), but here, accompanied by Cicily, he delivers a whopper. As for the tune itself, calling it vintage Vidyasagar is quite an understatement. And it's so lovely!
Koduvaa Meesai (Dhool) - Is there a song as foot-tapping as this? And coupled with Manikka Vinayagam's spirited rendition, the Tamil-Punjabi-folk fusion is just dhool!
Yukta Mookhey (Poovellam Un Vasam) - Catchy beats and complemented by effervescent vocals from Devan Ekambaram and Clinton Cerejo.
Kukku Kukku (Alice in Wonderland) - Set to a varied assortment of percussive rhythms, each ripple of Kukku Kukku brims with all the hallmark of a creator who is fully in his element.
Oru Naal Iravil (Kanden Kadhalai) - Pritam's Mauja Hi Mauja gets a groovy Tamil makeover, with ebullient vocals from Tippu and Benny Dayal for company.
Endhuku Endhuku, Devathala Ninnu (Nenu) - For the Telugu remake of Kaadhal Kondein, Vidyasagar infuses classical tunes with contemporary stylings, placing singer Karthik and Harish Raghavendra's voices front and centre.
Yera Thazha (Peranmai) - A surprisingly minimalist acoustic melody from Vidyasagar, but delectable all the same in Sadhana Sargam's flawless singing.
Nooraandukku Oru Murai (Thaayin Manikodi) - An intoxicating semi-classical melody sung by Gopal Sharma and Devie Neithiyar that features a delicate and beautiful balance of soaring harmonies and swelling strings.
Sun Sun Sundhari (Ordinary) - Karthik and Madhu Balakrishnan, need I even say anything more?
Malarvaka Kombathu (Ennum Eppozhum) - P. Jayachandran has been part of many of Vidyasagar's fantastic compositions like Poove Poove, Kannil Kaashithumbakal, Punnellin Kathirola, Aaraarum, Marannittumenthino, Enthe Innum Vanneela and Prayam Nammil, but Malarvaka is altogether a whole new level of bliss.
Vaanam Chaayum (Anarkali) - This stunner of a semi-classical melody sung by K. S. Harisankar is borderline eargasm!
Otta Thumbi (Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum) - Shankar Mahadevan and K. S. Chithra join hands for an utterly delectable melody.
Nilamalare (Diamond Necklace) - A Hindustani ghazal sung to perfection by Srinivasan Ragunathan, and that sarangi and tabla in the background is just mind-blowing.
Chandanathennalai (Vaidooryam) - Madhu Balakrishnan at it again, this time alongside Sujatha, for what's a mesmerising melody.
Nee Paarkum (Thiruttuppayale 2) - Vidyasagar's most recent outing, and Sathyaprakash aces the sedate tune with his fabulous rendition.
