Google may be scattershot about its
messaging strategy, but it appears to be ironing out its chinks of late, separating Hangouts for office, Allo and Duo for personal communication and Messages, with newly added support for
Rich Communication Services, as some sort of a blanket SMS-cum-chat app. Now in a latest update to the latter, Google has announced that brands and businesses can take advantage of RCS to deliver
multimedia-rich messages for Android users so that "a retailer can send beautiful images of their products, rather than a text message, and even let the customer select and buy something, all without leaving the messaging app." While it's heartening to know that
even Microsoft is on board, time alone will tell if RCS can emerge a viable alternative to
Facebook Messenger and
Apple iMessage, both of which own a sizeable chunk of the B2C communication market.
