Tech Brief: Instagram is Coming for YouTube

After having successfully managed to stop Snapchat in its tracks, Facebook-owned photo-sharing service Instagram is reportedly planning to launch long-form video content (paywall) on its platform, going as far as creating a dedicated space to feature scripted shows, music videos and more. Think of a Snapchat Discover hub blended with YouTube-like streaming content. While the ability to post hour-long video clips is certainly interesting, the real story is how Instagram is positioning itself as a YouTube alternative, delivering wholesome entertainment ranging from photos to Stories to videos. The announcement is scheduled for June 20, confirming earlier reports by TechCrunch. The news also comes close on the heels of a new Pew Research Center survey which found YouTube to be the most popular social media platform among teens, followed by Instagram and Snapchat.
