Tech Brief: Amazon Acquires Online Pharmacy Startup PillPack
After conquering online retail, getting its hands wet on physical bookstores and supermarket chains, it was forecasted that it wouldn't be long before Amazon acted as a middleman for drug supplies. And that day has arrived. Today, the popular ecommerce giant announced it is acquiring PillPack, a Boston-based online pharmacy startup that caters to customers who take multiple prescriptions. The news comes months after a CNBC report that revealed Walmart's plans to buy the startup for US$ 1 billion. For Amazon, the acquisition is all about making Prime a lucrative subscription bundle, but the prospect of same-day drug deliveries does sound like a smart move, what say? Meanwhile, Amazon's entry into drug-retail spooked shareholders of major pharmacy stocks, with rivals CVS, Walgreens, and Rite-Aid losing a collective US$ 12.8 billion in market value on Thursday alone.
