Tech Brief: Amazon Debuts Ad-Supported Video on Demand Service, IMDb Freedive (Updated)

Confirming long-standing rumours of an ad-supported video streaming service, Amazon officially announced the launch of IMDb Freedive, giving U.S. users access to an ad-supported collection of TV shows like Fringe, Heroes, The Bachelor and Without a Trace, as well as Hollywood movies like Awakenings, Foxcatcher, Memento, Monster, Run Lola Run, The Illusionist, The Last Samurai, True Romance, and others. Like with YouTube's recent foray into free movie streaming, Freedive's catalog, also accessible via Prime Video, aims to lure users away from rivals like Netflix and Hulu, even as the market continues to get saturated with dozens of VoD services.

Update on Jun. 18: Amazon has announced that it's rebranding the service as IMDb TV, in addition to offering a broader content selection, bringing thousands of new movie and TV titles to the ad-supported service in the coming month. It also said it will be launching IMDb TV in Europe later this year, bringing a premium collection of movies and TV shows to customers for free.
