Book Review: Skin Deep

Here's a novel worthy of giving Gillian Flynn a run for her money. Skin Deep, the latest outing by Liz Nugent, is so dark, twisted an exploration of identity and the disproportionate value placed on beauty, it is visceral and arresting. The story isn't so much a thriller as it's a psychological mindf**k, a character study of Delia, both a beauty and a beast, capable of inflicting untold cruelty and suffering, bunking off leaving anyone who crosses paths with her in tatters. Set in the desolate Irish island of Iniscran, Nugent keeps the story moving on shaky ground, playing the cards close to her chest, and never fully preparing the reader for what's to follow, even as the action shifts from London to Nice, all the while unmasking the self-centred, repulsive, manipulative side of Delia. Sharp, urgent and vividly written, Skin Deep is nothing short of a compelling tale of psychological unravelling. Highly recommended.
