Music Review: Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (Tamil)
Composer(s): Anirudh Ravichander

For an Anirudh musical, Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is strangely devoid of his signature spark. In an interview leading up to Vivegam's release, the composer talked about how the movie would be "packed with Indian melodies" and how the album may end up having as much as nine tracks. Fast forward six months later, the soundtrack is officially here and surprisingly, there is very little in it that qualifies as melodious. Naana Thaana, with its catchy mix of tabla and ektara, is lovely, but little else really works. Not even Engae Endru Povathu, for all its invigorating lyrics and sombre rock base, or Sodakku, despite its frenetic kuthu soundbed and effortless rendition by Anthony Daasan.

Yikes! I thought you would give it an A, but you gave it an M. Either way, despite me liking those songs that you have mentioned in your review, I agree with you being disappointed about this soundtrack from him, considering their last collaboration was Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (his career best work IMO). Hopefully, D. Imman’s 100th album aka Tik Tik Tik will compensate for that disappointment.
ReplyDeleteI debated hard choosing between A or M, ended up giving the latter, since I really didn't find anything that appealed to me. There are some interesting bits here and there, sure, but it fails to come together cohesively IMO.
DeleteTik Tik Tik is definitely a lot better!
