Director Sudheer Varma's Ranarangam brings together Prashant Pillai and Sunny M. R. — the people who were in charge of the background score and songs for his 2017 film Keshava — alongside singer Karthik Rodriguez, at the same time retaining his trademark quirk that appears to be a common factor underscoring all his films right from Swamy Ra Ra to Dohchay. Ranarangam also happens to be Varma's first multi-composer outing, whose three previous works have exclusively featured Sunny's music. Yet the switch appears to have had the desired result, even if it never feels more than the sum of its parts.

Karthik's Kummeyra and Kannu Kotti are both retro-laced mixes coupled with melodic and electronic flourishes, even as Sunny crafts a breezy electropop confection in Pilla Picture Perfect that's sung by Nikhita Gandhi. Prashant brings his sister Preeti Pillai to croon the subdued EDM-leaning Evaro Evaro, which she does spectacularly well complemented by an interesting fusion of nadaswaram (O. K. Gopi) and flute (Rajesh C.). But it's Seetha Kalyanam — not to be confused with Sooraj S. Kurup's fantastic song of the same name from Solo, although both are based on the same Tyagaraja's kriti — which tops everything. Prashant too seems to be shredding on all cylinders, concocting an electrifying classical tune that gains from Sreehari's singing and an ethereal blend of nadaswaram and synthetic sounds. Prashant, Sunny and Karthik deliver a suitably off-piste album with Ranarangam.
