2017 in Music: Top 25 Songs in Malayalam

The eclectic musical potpourri that's Solo stands out in what was a fantastic year for Malayalam film music...

Aal Ayaal (Masala Coffee), Roshomon (Prashant Pillai), Oru Vanchi Paattu, Thaalolam (Agam), Sajan More Ghar Aaye (Filter Coffee), Sita Kalyanam (Sooraj S. Kurup), Karaiyaadhe (Gaurav Godkhindi) - THE soundtrack of the year for me, not just for the sheer variety, but also for the composers themselves who seem to be in a race to out-do each other and come up with the best tune. No wonder, it's difficult to pick one single favourite!

Aaro Nenjil, Eantammede Jimikki Kammal (Shaan Rahman) - Shaan Rahman is no stranger to dreamy melodies, yet Aaro Nenjil emerges an easy winner. As for Eantammede..., need I even say anything?

Ozhukiyozhuki, Akale Oru Kaadinte, Maavilakudil, Aaradyam, Njanee Oonjalil, Kannile Poika (Bijibal) - The one composer I had great difficulty keeping track of, given his prolific run in 2017, but the gorgeous melodies more than make up for the effort!

Ekayaai Nee (Deepak Dev) - Unnikrishnan is the man, and he needs to sing more. Seriously!

Joleem Kooleem (Gopi Sundar) - Classical-folk fusion has never sounded this catchy.

Unarukayaano (Gopi Sundar) - Gopi Sundar's best work this year, and Sayanora's husky vocals aptly complements the brooding melody.

Minnunnunde Mullapole (Ashwin Renju) - Karthik and melodies are a match made in heaven!

Nanavere (Justin Varghese) - Lovely assortment of clock ticks, guitar and sarod is lovely!

Kilivathilin Chare Nee (M. Jayachandran) - Anne Amie aces this beautiful tune composed by Jayachandran that would make A. R. Rahman beam with pride.

Divaayaanam (Rahul Raj) - A groovy semi-classical techno fusion, featuring a sublime blend of flutes and violins.

Janah Meri Janah (Hesham Abdul Wahab) - The song comes in two versions, one sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan and a second guitary reprise, by Adheef Muhammed, and I am having a hard time deciding between the two. What stunning tunes!

Vaa Kuruvi (Sanjeev Thomas) - Mesmerising is the word!

Ethetho Swapnamo (Sankar Sharma) - Romantic ballad that oozes Ilaiyaraaja by the bucketloads. And I'm loving it.
