2017 in Music: Top 15 Songs in Tamil
My absolute top favourite Tamil songs from the 70 odd soundtracks I reviewed in 2017 -
Kadhalaada (Anirudh Ravichander) - I simply can't have enough of this melodious song from Anirudh. I am not sure if it's Pradeep Kumar and Shashaa Tirupati's singing or Ananthakrrishnan's violin that's doing the trick, but whatever it is, it is mesmerising.
Saarattu Vandiyila (A. R. Rahman) - Talk about an addictive folk fusion! Easily one of the best from Rahman in recent years.
Kaarkala Megham (Rahul Raj) - A signature Rahul Raj melody, so mellifluous and well-sung by the composer himself and Sunitha Sarathy.
Nee Paarkum (Vidyasagar) - Vidyasagar, in his musical comeback after more than year, still shows that his melodious side is as intact as ever.
Megamo Aval (Santhosh Narayanan) - Santhosh might have been largely missing in action this year, but this minimalist melody more than made up for it.
Yaadhumaagi Nindraai (Achu Rajamani) - Achu is criminally underrated, and this ambient tune is ample proof as to why he needs to be seen more often.
Venpani Malare, Paarthen (Sean Roldan) - Sean Roldan's take on Ilaiyaraaja works wonders!
Azhagile Enai (Sean Roldan) - 2017 might as well be singer-composer Pradeep Kumar's year, given the number of hit melodies he has gotten to be a part of. And that's just not in Tamil!
Kukkotti Kunaatti (Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy & Vedanth Bharadhwaj) - I may be in the minority here, but as much as I found Aruvi's tunes to be unconventional and delightful, the singing left a lot to be desired. But not in Kukkotti Kunaatti, an utterly charming a cappella'esque melody sung by Praniti.
Laali Laali (M. Ghibran) - Ghibran had a super-prolific 2017, but this bewitching romantic ballad is right up his alley, incorporating an astounding array of sounds to fantastic effect.
Engapora Dora (Vivek-Mervin) - Captivating guitar-strums and semi-classical elements adorn what's an oh-so-beautiful melody.
Yaar (Vishal Chandrashekhar) - Veteran S.P.B. enchants his way through a lovely ballad that's an intoxicating blend of veena and tabla.
Uyirile Uyirile (G. V. Prakash Kumar) - Vijay Prakash wows in this fabulous Hindustani piece set to tune by G. V. Prakash.
Kanna Katti (Justin Prabhakaran) - Folk fusion done right, with pitch-perfect vocal support from Haricharan and Latha Krishna.
