Movie Review: Mission Mangal (Hindi)

Debut director Jagan Shakti's Mission Mangal, about India's epochal satellite mission to Mars, is an exhilarating blend of drama and thrills, and an entertaining crowd-pleaser that tells the stories of the women scientists at the forefront and their attempts to put a satellite on Mars' orbit at a shoestring budget, forcing them to device and improvise a variety of techniques (read: jugaad) to conserve fuel and make the most of the limited space available to fit the payload designed to study the Red Planet. It's as much an ambitious endeavour as it's a Mars Orbiter Mission propelled by female energy (led by a perfect Vidya Balan, with nary a false note) that culminates in an invigorating finish, effectively accompanied with Amit Trivedi's adrenaline-pumping score. Yes, the science is over-simplified, the need to have an antagonist just for the sake of one is a bit contrived, and there's a goofy, light-headedness to the film, but who says scientists can't have fun? Mission Mangal achieves lift off and soars, and there's no looking back.
