Tech Brief: Google Previews Android Q Beta for Pixel Devices

Search giant Google has officially released the first preview of its next major version of Android mobile operating system, in what has recently become a standard way to allow developers and Android enthusiasts have an early look at the new features and APIs before they are finalised and pushed to consumers sometime later this fall. Android Q, as it's called, comes with improved privacy controls - an iOS-like permission pop-up that enables users to give apps permission to see their location never, only when the app is in use (running), or all the time (when in the background), faster Share menu, wider adoption of Product Sans font, native screen recording, redesigned Files app, limited support for dark mode (enabled only via Android debug bridge), capabilities to connect and share Wi-Fi networks using QR codes, font customisation, and native support for foldable phones. As with any beta, expect the new features to be subjected to change and further refinement as Google iterates them through over the course of next five months.
