Music Review: Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (Hindi)

Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota's music by Karan Kulkarni is unabashedly loony in the same way Quick Gun Murugun was 10 years ago, accentuated by unconventional tunes and wacky arrangements. What's more, the musical nuances are a grab bag of styles, flitting effortlessly from retro-funk (Rappan Rappi Rap, tailor-made for Benny Dayal) to techno-bhangra (Kitthon Da Tu Superstar) to rock 'n' roll (Life Mein Fair Chance, with Tumhari Sulu director Suresh Triveni doing an admirable job on the vocals), defying mainstream sensibilities yet catchy enough to sustain interest. Tere Life is lush, an intoxicating tapestry of strings and finger snaps, Nakhrewaali is a heady, dazzling blend of rap, rock, funk and electronica, moulded into a swirl of kaleidoscopic energy (the use of udukai is an interesting touch!), and Dreamtime, with its waltz'y dream-like tune, works as a beautiful melodic breeze in Kamakshi Rai's captivating rendition. Sparkly synths bedeck the spiffy rap rework of Rappan Rappi Rap, but Kitthon Da Tu Superstar's Shooter Version takes it a notch higher, playing around all sorts of groovy, vaporous sounds over a rollicking rhythm, with a generous dose of tumbi thrown in for good measure. Karan Kulkarni keeps things eclectic and delightful with Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.
