Tech Brief: Apple Cancels AirPower

In an unprecedented move, Apple has announced that it has completely scrapped its AirPower product, citing it was unable to meet its own standards for the hardware. AirPower, which was announced in 2017 alongside the iPhone X, was supposed to allow users charge multiple devices wirelessly on a charging mat without having to worry about where they were placed. But since its unveil, the project has been plagued by overheating issues, with Apple remaining uncharacteristically silent, revealing precious little about its release.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in an emailed statement to TechCrunch, which broke the story.
