Listen: Caribou's "You and I"
Dan Snaith's multiple musical aliases have served multiple purposes over the course of past several years — as Caribou, he was free to explore breezy psychedelia; as Daphni, get to make groovy, disco-leaning club-calibrated tracks; and as Manitoba, traverse a sonic territory that's more ambient folktronica. But Home, which dropped back in October, offered the first glimpse of the Canadian composer mixing these disparate elements of soul and funk for a quietly groovy retro fusion. You and I — both the songs are set to feature in his upcoming full-length Suddenly arriving in... yes, you guessed it... February! — takes this potent cocktail of sounds a notch higher, characterised by sudden, unpredictable shifts in rhythms, as if the song is pulling itself apart in real time, slowing down and speeding up at once. The result is an assemblage of iridescent, melodic synths alternated with trap-like beats, even as it turns into a musical collage of contrasting tones and textures. Give it a listen below -
