Music Review: Darbar (Tamil)

Composer(s): Anirudh Ravichander

Anirudh, who opened this year with the Rajinikanth starrer Petta, closes out the year with yet another Rajini film, and like the other movie, Darbar features no female singers. What's more, the songs are shockingly trite for such a huge film, so much so that it makes Petta a superior soundtrack on several levels. Not only does Darbar play out along predictable lines, sounding almost like a continuation of Petta, the only time it deviates from the formula — Tharam Maara — it's a straight up rehash of his own Gaali Vaaluga from Agnyaathavaasi. Anirudh, sticking to his limited sonic palette, serves an unsatisfying medley of mediocre numbers that coasts high on Rajini nostalgia.
