Music Briefs: Burra Katha, iSmart Shankar, Prekashante Metro, Rajdooth, Shubarathri, Unarvu, Unda & Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2

New music from Sai Kartheek, Bijibal, Mani Sharma, Prashant Pillai, Nakul Abhyankar and more...

Rajdooth - Gopi Sundar, Sachin Warrier, Shaan Rahman, Sooraj Santhosh, Jakes Bejoy and Yazin Nizar, and now Varun Sunil becomes the latest Malayalam import to hit Telugu shores. Percussionist and founder of Masala Coffee, Sunil brings actor and Thaikkudam Bridge member Siddharth Menon to croon the effervescent melody Manasuna Manasuna, with Sunil himself going behind the mic for the ethereal Emo Emo. Masala Coffee lead vocalist Sooraj Santhosh gives a spirited rendition of Chustune Unna, but Rajanna, sung by Anish Krishnan, Ajmal Abdul Rahiman aka Fura, and Jasim works splendidly as a stadium-rocking anthem. Varun Sunil delivers an adequately engaging fare with Rajdooth.

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2 - The album gets off a forgettable start with Thiruvizha, but V. Selvaganesh ropes in Haricharan for a pleasing folk piece Otha Parvayil, as does Orasatha Di sound in Karthik and Shweta Mohan's singing.

Burra Katha - The faux classical sounds pair very well with Andanike's rock base, and Hema Chandra's vocals are a big plus. Season favourite Anurag Kulkarni croons Okate Okate, but it's the slick hip-hop arrangements that make it a clincher. Anaganagaa is more Devi Sri Prasad than Sai Kartheek, but to give credit where it's due, he churns out a foot-tapping fare, aided spectacularly by Dhanunjay. Kaala Bhairava lends his soul to the stringy pathos-soaked Neevalle Neevalle, closing the soundtrack on a sombre note. With Burra Katha, Sai Kartheek spins his own musical story, and with massy results.

iSmart Shankar - Mani Sharma returns with a full-fledged commercial soundtrack that ticks all the crowd-pleasing checkboxes, if only with less than satisfactory results. The only standout is Undipo, where Sharma reworks Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's Bulleya for a rock-qawwali fusion that finds its perfect match in Anurag Kulkarni.

Unda - When it's Prashant Pillai in charge of the music score, you can always expect the unexpected. For a movie that unfolds in the maoist-prone district of Bastar, Pillai unleashes a wacky world music trip that blends Tuareg-style elements with Indian folk, resulting in a layered, rich musical experience at once earthy and spellbinding.

Unarvu - Singer Nakul Abhyankar turns composer, and he has a keeper in Naanum Neeyum, with Karthik lending fabulous vocal purchase to the soaring melody, even as Sangeet Mishra's sarangi and D. Balasubramani's nadaswaram provide the perfect accompaniments. Enda Poovum is airy romantic ballad, if coursing along predictable lines, but Whistle Podu is raucous kuthu in Bamba Bakya's peppy rendition.

Prekashante Metro - Is there only one song this film? But Rahul Subrahmanian has a delectable melody in Mazhamukil, with Najim Arshad and Shweta Mohan rendering the acoustic-driven composition expectedly well.

Shubarathri - Glad to see Bijibal back again in action after a short hiatus. Aalameenidin is smooth-sailing mappila paattu sung by the composer himself (the shehnai is a lovely touch), but Anuraga Kilivathil splendidly blends semi-classical elements for what's a phenomenal melody backed by K. S. Harisankar and Sangeetha Srikanth.
