Music Review: Kaappaan (Tamil)
Composer(s): Harris Jayaraj

With Harris Jayaraj in charge of the music score for Kaappaan, it's a foregone conclusion that it was always going to be a retread of his earlier works. That's his defining sound, after all. The better question to ask, then, would be how much of an annoyance this was going to present. And the answer is, not bad? Like the Dev that came out earlier this year, some of the songs are very much less objectionable than others, and almost all are certifiably catchy. That, sure, is a sign of a master pop craftsman at work. Hey Amigo is Despacito 2.0, the exuberant Latinate dance piece riding on Colonial Cousins' Lesle Lewis (who was last heard in Anniyan's Kannum Kannum Nokia and as a composer for Modhi Vilayadu) and Jonita Gandhi's peppy vocals. Harris' daughter Nikitha makes her singing debut in the sweet Vinnil Vinmeen... and that's about it? But make no mistake. The production is sleek and expensive — the songs have been mastered by Chris Gehringer, who is known for his work with Madonna, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga — yet its stylistic turns feel more like a rote exercise than bold creative experiments.
