Music Briefs: ABCD, Amar, Bakrid, Bharat, Kuttymama, Mr. Local & Oronnonnara Pranayakadha

New music from Achu Rajamani, Anand Madhusoodanan, Arjun Janya, D. Imman and Vishal-Shekhar!

Bharat - What on earth has happened to Vishal-Shekhar? After the dud that was Student of the Year 2, the duo churn out another forgettable fare in Bharat. Are they are on autopilot or something? Because nothing else explains the utter assembly line quality that plagues the album. Skip!

ABCD - Sandalwood composer Judah Sandhy makes his Telugu composing debut for a remake of the 2013 Malayalam film of the same name (which featured the airy Vaanam by Gopi Sundar), and its one that never diverges from middle of the road barring Mella Mellagaa, where he ropes Sid Sriram for a flute-driven dubstep EDM jam that's just as insidiously catchy.

Bakrid - Imman seems to be in no mood to switch up his pastoral palette, but at least he has Sid Sriram for company, who delivers mighty well the strings-heavy melody Aalankuruvigalaa. The rest — Karadu Moradu Poove is just a rework of Kannaana Kanney — not so much.

Kuttymama - Achu Rajamani makes his composing debut in Malayalam (although he has delivered background scores for a bunch of films like Kurukshetra and Puthan Panam), and my God, what a stunner it is. Thorathe is every bit the ethereal melody that he is well known for, pretty and minimalist in its arrangements (that kazoo is a lovely touch!), the tender and sedate composition finding its perfect vocal accompaniment in Vineeth Sreenivasan and Varsha Vinu. Vineeth also sings Thallalla Thallalla, a catchy traditional folk piece that evokes fond memories of M. Jayachandran's Vethyasthanam (Katha Parayumpol). I am going to say what I have been saying all this time: Achu needs to be heard more often!

Mr. Local - Anirudh Ravichander, in his signature style, lifts the foot-tapping Takkunu Takkunu, but the rest is blasé, sounding sub par in every conceivable way like most of Hip Hop Tamizha's recent works.

Amar - Arjun Janya's Amar hits all the expected beats and nothing more, but to give credit where it's due, Summane Heege Ninnane is lilting as is Onde Aetige, made all the more beautiful by the singers involved. Then there is Jassie Gift whose enthusiastic rendition powers the foot-tapping synth-laden folk number Joru Paattu.

Oronnonnara Pranayakadha - Anand Madhusoodanan crafts a euphonious melody in Malabari Penne that's by now Vineeth Sreenivasan's forte, while he gives the mappila pattu Jinnu Jinnu a clever spin by handing over the reins to the kids Pranavatmika and Aadityan, who do an admirable job singing it. Udalodu Uyirupol finds Haricharan Seshadri and Chinmayi reuniting again for a soothing semi-classical melody, even as guest composer Leela L. Girish Kuttan concocts a mighty engaging reethigowla raga-based tune in Athippoovin that would make Vidyasagar beam with pride.
