Heavy Rotation: Ajay-Atul, Devi Sri Prasad, Mani Sharma & More
A list of some of my favourite compositions from Mani Sharma, Keeravani and Ajay-Atul...
Minnalai Pidithu, May Madham, Mellinamae Mellinamae, Sarakku Vachirukken, Achchacho Punnagai (Shahjahan), Aal Thotta Bhoopathi, Sagiyea Sagiyea (Youth) - Shahjahan came out in 2001 but Mani Sharma's songs from the film still remain one of his best to date.
Kadhal Aararo (Narasimha), Hima Seemallo (Annayya), Kala Anuko (Azad), Silendru, Un Punnagai (Ezhumalai), Malligai Malligai (Arasu), Naanaga Naan (Gambeeram), Medhu Medhuvai (Jai), Swapnavenuvedo (Ravoyi Chandamama), Manasavachha Manasiste (Iddaru Mitrulu), Nammavemo (Parugu), Prema Desam (Sakthi), Abbo Nee Amma Goppade (Anji), O Prema (Devi Putrudu), Le Le Le (Gudumba Shankar) - Lilting classical-leaning melodies, with pitch-perfect vocal support from S.P.B., Chithra, Sujatha, Kalpana, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Harini.
Yamaha Nagari (Choodalani Vundi) - Mani Sharma's re-interpretation of Patnam Subramania Iyer's Raghuvamsha Sudha, superbly backed by Hariharan on the vocals.
Oh Cheli Nee Oyyarale (Arjun) - A fabulously crafted breezy melody by Mani Sharma, layered by amazing synths, flutes, guitars and strings, and to top it all, phenomenal vocals from Karthik and Chithra.
Mahaganapatim, Thaye Yashoda, Mathey, Samaja Varagamana, Alaap Jam, Jagado Dharana (Morning Raga) - While it's easy to scoff at the idea of westernising Carnatic music, Mani Sharma does a splendid job, daringly experimenting with the fusion genre to astounding results. Bombay Jayashri, Sudha Ragunathan, Gayathri and Nandini Srikar are dependably good as always.
Vande Mataram, Aadhir Maan Jhale, Partuni Yena, Konse Desh Chala (Nilkanth Master) - I can't think of any other composer apart from Vidyasagar, D. Imman, and Ajay-Atul who have nailed the Ilaiyaraaja aesthetic to a tee. Grand, spellbinding and utterly captivating, this four-song soundtrack by Gogavale brothers is a musical journey worth every minute.
Madhuram Madhuram (Shock), Jeev Rangla (Jogwa), Jeev Bhulala (Lai Bhaari) (Ajay-Atul) - More enchanting compositions from Ajay and Atul, and that can only be a good thing. And how lovely is S.P.B and Chithra's vocal chemistry in Madhuram!
Deva Devam (Attarintiki Daredi), Beat of Sachien (Sachien), Adada Adada (Santosh Subramaniam), Unn Paarvaiyil (Unakkum Enakkum), Aha Allari, Nuvvu Nuvvu (Khadgam), Infatuation, Panthamekkado (100% Love), Chali Chaliga (Mr. Perfect), Nestama Nestama (Damarukam), Niharika (Oosaravelli) (Devi Sri Prasad) - The kind of tuneful melodies not so often heard from DSP, so beautifully arranged and hummable.
Enduko Madi (Nenu Meeku Telusa...?), Sarle Vadiley (Kurradu) - Standout melodies from Achu Rajamani from his early outings, way before he struck gold with Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey.
Vaanam (ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi) - A breezy melody from Gopi Sundar along the lines of Khwabon Ke Parindey backed by splendid vocals from Anna Katharina Valayil, complemented by a gorgeous arrangement of plucked guitar patterns.
