Heavy Rotation: Chumped, D∆WN, Sound of Ceres & More
ANTI is finally upon us, and Drake and Zayn Malik drop new singles, among other recent listens from A. R. Rahman, Dawn Richard and Sound of Ceres...
Prologue, Signs of the Last Prophet, And He was Named Muhammad, The Camel's Divine Intervention, The Land of Friendship, A Mother's Advice to Her Son, The Search, The Sea Miracle (A. R. Rahman, Muhammad: The Messenger of God) - A. R. Rahman's breathtaking compositions, soaked in traditional Islamic music, make for blissful, compelling, and spell-binding listens.
Hypnotized (Akon) - Has an inevitable Locked Away hangover, but impossibly groovy nonetheless. And those Caribbean feels!
Not the One (Chumped) - The ultimate slayage, and my gosh, those frenetic guitars!
Not Above That (D∆WN) - Listening to Dawn Richard's Not Above That is akin to unwrapping a special gift. It's exhilarating and joyous amidst all that exploding synths. Plus, that drop is seriously dope.
Arizona (Frances Cone) - Riding on Cone's richly emotive vocals, Arizona is one song you wouldn't (and shouldn't) mind revisiting.
Sinister (Frankie Cosmos) - There's something vivacious about this Sinister song!
Trickle Trickle (Kill J) - A slinky smooth tune with pitch-perfect, whispery vocal delivery from Kill J.
Car (Porches) - Porches' Aaron Maine is my new favourite, and Car, his latest single after the superb Be Apart, is lovely and perfect, those guitars in particular.
Same 'Ol Mistakes, Needed Me, Never Ending, Close to You (Rihanna) - By now we have all come to appreciate the fact that RiRi's ANTI is far removed from the kind of radio-ready singles she is known for. But can we please - finally - acknowledge the tenuous synthy brilliance that's Tame Impala's New Person, Same Old Mistakes now that the Barbadian popstress has given her stamp of approval? Psychedelia and Rihanna are now a match made in heaven!
Hand of Winter (Sound of Ceres) - The orchestral splendour unleashed in this atmospheric transportive piece is plain bewitching; a masterfully eerie and hypnotic listen.
Ride of Your Life (Tinashe) - If Tinashe's recent outings Player and Energy were aimed straight at the dance floor, Ride of Your Life marks quite a departure, in that it just feels so sexy!
PILLOWTALK (ZAYN) - Zayn Malik's solo debut post his exit from boy band One Direction last year goes for a moody R&B vibe, but is also downright regular.
