Thani Oruvan |
Mohan Raja-helmed
Thani Oruvan is quite a thriller. We have Mithran (Jayam Ravi), a smart cop, whose mission to root out organised crime in the city leads him to a dangerous foe, an artful player who not just knows what moves to make, but does all of it without any compunction and batting nary an eyelid. Siddharth (well-played by a suave Arvind Swamy) is one of those rare breed of antagonists in Indian cinema who is more brain than brawn. Thus ensues a pretty engaging and intelligent game of cat and mouse, devoid of the usual stunts and melodrama, even if it's conveniently plotted and at times annoyingly too preachy. I don't mind inserting a social message to convey a point across, but the problem with
Thani Oruvan is that the hero is left to ramble on and on when a crisp line or two would have sufficed. And then you have Jayam Ravi himself, who despite looking the part, doesn't manage quite well to convey the single-minded obsession with Siddharth.
