Book Review: Watching You

Lisa Jewell explores themes of being watched or being the watcher in this taut, voyeuristic-leaning domestic drama, putting together a smartly crafted multi-perspective psychological thriller that revolves around Joey Mullen, who, with her newly wed husband Alfie, move to the upscale Bristol neighbourhood of Melville Heights to live with her brother Jack and his wife Rebecca. The shift is meant to be temporary until they figure out a way to stand on their own feet, but soon enough, she becomes infatuated with their charismatic new neighbour Tom Fitzwilliam, who may or may not have a shifty past and seems to bewitch women and girls alike. And then, of course, it all ends in a brutal murder with an intriguing assortment of suspects, as salacious secrets emerge and bubbling resentments come to the fore, paving the way for a satisfying, if not wholly surprising, finish.
