Listen: Chromatics' "On the Wall" (The Jesus and Mary Chain Cover)

Chromatics' Closer To Grey is an exercise in hypnosis, a woozy indie-popper that's akin to diving into a pool of slinky smooth grooves and studded with gleaming synths, channelling a sense of creeping unease that's equal parts atmospheric and sinister (Hello darkness, my old friend/ I've come to talk with you again, goes the opener, a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence). The Jesus and Mary Chain's On the Wall, while cut from the same cloth, is the album's centrepiece, getting an outstanding rework that adds a ticking clock, while stretching the song to an epic eight-minute long luxurious cascade of guitars and thudding beats swirled into a singular brand of nocturnal haze. Sonically gorgeous (You're No Good, Light as a Feather) and undeniably pretty, Closer To Grey is 46 minutes of pure aqueous goodness, and possibly Chromatics' most polished outing to date.
