Tech Brief: Apple Comes Under Scanner for Censoring Songs in Apple Music in China
Apple is facing criticism from different quarters after Hong Kong Free Press reported that the company removed a song by Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung from its Chinese version of Apple Music streaming service, raising concerns of censorship. "The youth are angry, heaven and earth are weeping… How did our land become a sea of blood? How did the path home become a path of no return?," the lyrics read, referencing the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. However this is not the first time Apple's China operations have attracted outside scrutiny. The company previously removed VPN apps from its App Store in the region that could have helped users bypass the Great Firewall, and even moved iCloud data of its Chinese users last year to a state-run operator named GCBD in order to comply with local regulations. It's also to be noted that Google's attempts to return to China after eight years with a censored search engine was met with severe backlash, leading it to abort the project late last year.
