Music Review: Aaruthra (Tamil)

Exactly an year after Thiruttuppayale 2, Vidyasagar's return comes at a time when up and coming new entrants are exploring varied sounds, while Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman continue to tweak and experiment their patented musical styles in interesting ways. Vidyasagar, in contrast, seemed to have fallen off the radar in recent years, but it could also be that the man is actively resisting any opportunity to stereotype him as a composer of melodies and kuthu numbers, a blend that has marred his Tamil discography with inconsistent results. While melodies continue to remain his forte (Chellama Chellam, which would make Ilaiyaraaja proud), Vidyasagar's use of folk sounds in Aaruthra is something of a welcome departure, even if it's regrettably bland.
