Reads: The Fallout Between Facebook and Instagram
On Monday night, when Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger announced their departure from the company, it marked the end of a six-year long association with Facebook since its purchase by the latter back in 2012. While it's true that Facebook used to let them operate independently at the start, what is also true is that their relationship with Zuckerberg had soured in the past few months over an "unusual uptick" in his day-to-day involvement, giving an impression that Facebook intended to grow its core product at Instagram's expense. Even if it meant trying all possible annoying ways to lure the photo-sharing network's users back to Facebook through push notifications and adding an useless "Open Facebook" link. Nothing could be more dramatic than Systrom's parting words though. In all but a few lines, he used Instagram's corporate blog to confirm that he would be forming a new company with Krieger. So yay for competition I guess?
