It's official.
Google has merged Google Play Music and YouTube Music (which offered access to background playback and offline downloads via
YouTube Red) into one music streaming service. Branded
YouTube Music, the new music platform brings the latest music, remixes, covers, live performances and music videos all in one place (perhaps taking cues from Apple Music, which recently added a
dedicated music videos section) for US$ 9.99 a month or for free if you don't mind the occassional ad.
To be available on May 22 in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea, YouTube Music is also expected to
eventually replace Google Play Music,
confirming earlier rumours of a YouTube-centric music service. (The blog posts however don't address how Google is planning the transition, adding to the confusion.) Interestingly, the video streaming platform's Red subscription plan will transition to a new
YouTube Premium layer for US$ 11.99, which also includes YouTube Music, in addition to unlocking access to original programming content and an ad-free experience across YouTube.
