Heavy Rotation: Jenny Hval, Leapling, Told Slant & More

Is it only me? Or is it really true that today's mainstream pop music has lost its capacity to surprise? For I find them to be dated, fleetingly catchy and so transient, I doubt I would be even listening to them two months down the lane. The closest that I have come to enjoy thus far this year is Annie's WorkX2 and Ariana Grande's Into You, but is that it? There ought to be more, no?

Adis Abebah (Air) - French psychedelic outfit Air's Indian Summer which debuted not so long back was good enough, but this new single from their to-be-released album TWENTYEARS is just beyond haunting and hypnotic.

Ambulance (The Amazing) - Can a song be both atmospheric and melancholic at the same time? If so, this is it!

Female Vampire (Jenny Hval) - A captivating melody that's absolutely ethereal and riveting from start to finish.

You Lemme Know (Leapling) - From Brooklyn trio Leapling's upcoming album Suspended Animation comes an addictive new single that rides on a thudding percussion-based arrangement as it approaches a soaring crescendo of sorts.

Love on the Brain (Rihanna) - I mean, I love this Rihanna song from ANTI to bits. Even more so, after listening to her performing it live at Billboard Music Awards last week. That emotion and rasp in her voice is giving me chills!

What's It Gonna Be (Shura) - There's an undeniable Carly Rae Jepsen like-vibe to this new offering from Shura, but it's so catchy!

High Dirge (Told Slant) - With a title like High Dirge, it's only reasonable to expect an emotionally charged song, but Felix Walworth takes it several notches higher with an achingly vulnerable rendition.
