Heavy Rotation: Bickram Ghosh, Pranshu Jha, Praveen Lakkaraju & More
Praveen Lakkaraju has a likeable melody in Emai Pothane (O Pitta Katha) that he sets against a profusion of strings and an insistent beat-driven percussion. Sweekar Agasthi-sung Edho Edho is another highlight, working well as a breezy acoustic fare while simultaneously blending Hindustani elements to fantastic effect.
Actor and singer Remya Nambeesan's brother Rahul Subrahmanian latest effort Safe is a short three-track effort, but he manages to pack a mesmerising standout in Vanavillen, an euphonious semi-classical piece led beautifully, as always, by Harisankar.
Gagan Baderiya, for his part, knocks it out of the park in Malgudi Days, the soundtrack populated by an assortment of lilting melodic pieces (Hoo Malege, Oorondu Karedante, Nenapina Doniyali, Kanneeru Kenney Mele) that are slow, dreamy and beautiful with fine vocals from Raghu Dixit, Sanjith Hegde, Siddhartha Belmannu, Sruthy Sasidharan and Madhuri Seshadri. Hoo Malege, in particular, is a stunner all the way.
Teddy is a true blue D. Imman album; Nanbiye and Marandhaye are lovely, but in a predictable kind of way we've have to expect from the composer. The overall effect is a soundtrack that doesn't outstay its welcome, but doesn't beg for a second listen either.
Adiye, from Anthony Daasan's Vairii, is a folky keeper, complemented beautifully by V. M. Mahalingam's vocals and a lovely assortment of strings and traditional percussive elements. What a pleasant surprise!
Gully Boy music supervisor Ankur Tewari turns full-fledged composer for Guilty, a winsome mix of brooding rock textures and soaring melodic pieces (Rehne Do Na, Kahun, Likhi Meri), offering a set of slickly produced electronic-leaning pop tracks.
Here's a quick roundup of my new favourites from Bickram Ghosh (Asur - Radha), Anupam Roy (Dwitiyo Purush - Je Kawta Din, Abar Phire Ele, Aami Aachhi), Debojyoti Mishra (Robibaar - Tomay Mone Porchilo), Amitraj (Vikun Taak - Chandava), Pritam Chakraborty (The Forgotten Army - Chanda), and Pranshu Jha (Jiilka - Olave Jeeva, Aajare)...
