Vennila's folky soundscape harks back to maestro Ilaiyaraaja's melodies from the back in the day, but the sparkling tune is not without Santhosh Narayanan's trademark key shifts and tones. The rhythmic percussion (comprising of urumi, dholak, and tabla) and delectable riffs make it instantly likeable, with Vijaynarain and Sangeetha Karuppiah lending sterling vocal support. Sung by the composer himself, Aara Thedum is built around a gentle bedrock of nadaswaram and acoustic guitars (Keba Jeremiah), coming to a head in an enticing harmony that's calming as it's sublime. Vaazha Vechonae's stirring pathos gains immensely from its stunning use of strings (Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra) and Vijaynarain's emotive voice that lends it the requisite head-turning heft. Mukesh's lively rendition of Thandhom Thana is the song's highlight, its breezy folk sound accompanied by a lovely sprinkle of flute and percussion (Is it only me, or does the song remind you of A. R. Rahman's Maduraikku Pogathadee?). Album closer Nellu Vaasam finds the composer once again channelling the maestro, layering the chorus over a languidly strummed guitar seamlessly on top of each other. Santhosh Narayanan's experiment with rustic folk pays off admirably well in Vellai Yaanai.
