Movie Review: The Autopsy of Jane Doe (English)

The Autopsy of
Jane Doe
In a year that has already seen the likes of The Witch, Demon, Green Room, Lights OutDon't Breathe and The Invitation, comes yet another impressive addition from director André Øvredal. At the very outset, The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a scary story about a haunted morgue (which doubles up the creepy factor!), but it's so smart and effectively terrifying that it subverts horror tropes while serving up more than enough stylish thrills to satisfy genre enthusiasts. As a film about a father-son mortician duo autopsying a nameless jane doe who was discovered dead, naked but unscathed, in the basement of a house that witnessed an inexplicable bloody massacre of sorts, it blends well the science and the supernatural. And as the unsettling autopsy takes an increasingly grisly turn for the protagonists, it's only a matter of time before the thrills are ramped up and logic is forsaken in favour of eerily atmospheric jump scares that spring out of nowhere. With The Autopsy..., Øvredal sets up a confounding puzzle and gives it a truly gruesome twist. The third act is perhaps a little pedestrian, but it sure is a movie that plays to your morbid curiosity. Not to be missed!
